hi everyone, we are new to Sturgis this year. we have rented one of the onsite rv's. we have been reading throught the rules and are unclear of one of them. its says no alcohol to be brought on to the premesis. does this mean just the concert area or are you not allowed to bring your own beer anywhere on the property? we just want to clear this up....after all we dont want to be kicked out our first time there!!!

thanks....Charlie & Nikki

I stayed at the chip last year (great fun by the way!) and by the FAQ and my experience last year any alcohol is fine in the campground but you just can't take it into the ampitheatre and security is pretty strict about who goes in and out of that area and booze either has to be finished or dumped before going in but the campground is free game.

The beer issue is both a Liquor License matter for the Chip as well as an insurance matter for them. The way the rules are written, you are NOT supposed to buy beer off premises and bring it into the Chip. When they(the Chip)have a liquor license granted by the state, there are specific guidelines and laws about who is supposed to be in control over who is selling liquor to the people attending a concert, including those people who staying at the Chip. This also includes matters about consuming beer, alchol on the property.

They sell beer in the store and at the bars within the Chip. If the beer within the Amphitheatre is not purchased from the Chip and there is an accident or God forbid someone would get killed, there would be a bees nest of problems for the Chip and their ability to sell liquor in the future on their premises. The Chip probably would lose all of thier insurance coverage which mean that NO entertainers would play there, which would be the beginning of the end of this great experience that Woody and his family have given the last 25 years of their lives too.

Last year, one of the security people at the entrance gate walked from front to back through my motorhome and they asked whether I was bringing any weapons, drugs into the Chip. I can certainly see why they are checking the motorhomes for someone trying to sneak in. The issue of beer never came up while she was in my motorhome.

I know that someone will probably write on this board that the reason the Chip has the rule about beer is so that they can try and force people to buy all of their beer at the Chip. Please keep in mind the business aspect of the Liquor License and for those of you who have attended the Chip in the past, the same rule was in effect for every year I have been going to the Chip and that has been the last 5 years.

Remember, Woody started the Chip because the Sturgis town fathers really put the clamps on partying, etc. and kicked the Rally out of downtown. The Chip has so few rules as they let you do what you want as long as it isn't harming anyone. I would suggest calling the ticket office to get a specific answer to your question.
